Delightful Discoveries, the Celebration of a Journey
Delightful Discoveries: The Celebration of a Journey, is an installation conceived and created in New Mexico during my time at the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program. It consists of 49 golden ceramic “rocks” placed in the short prairie/desert vegetation of Southern New Mexico. I arranged the “rocks” at a distance from one another in the landscape so that the entirety of the work cannot be seen from a single vantage point. Instead, each successive reflective “rock” is meant to catch the viewer’s attention drawing them deeper into the installation, ultimately guiding them through the natural environment.
Delightful Discoveries enacts the way I explore new places and stands as a metaphor for how I navigate the creative process. For example, here in Roswell I became intimately acquainted with the unique topography of Bottomless Lakes State Park as I walked from one sparkling selenite rock formation to another. This magical type of investigation rekindles a childlike wonder where the familiar and overlooked becomes new and fascinating. I aim to celebrate a creative process where what is joyful and glittering drives curiosity. Each rock becomes a pivotal moment calling us out of ourselves and into the unexamined life.
